Quill and Quillion

Where Pen and Sword Cross.

I cannot stress this enough: "know your stuff." Whether it is a fascinating fantasy, absurd comedy, or intense drama, incorrect information or lack of geographical or historical information is a sure sign that the author is numb when it comes to research. All books need to be researched in one way or another.

Know the politics of the world your characters live in and the laws that govern them, this in turn gives you insight to why their characters are the way they are and what drives them into certain predictable directions. It's the change within the story that drives them to an often-unpredictable direction.

It is also suggested that you know your geography, not just of the local area that the story may be set, however, also the areas that surround the locale. Research or develop a history for the geographical area. Don't just concentrate on the human history but also the natural and environmental history. All of these factors are important for the development of your characters and the community they thrive in.
